First Wave Feminism - The SuffragettesFirst wave feminism all started with the suffragettes in the pursuit of votes for women, and after 15 years, women over the age of thirty who owned property were granted the vote. These women fought hard and long to achieve their goal, and turned to some quite radical ways of protesting, such as breaking shop windows, setting buildings on fire, and going on hunger strike when arrested.
Second Wave FeminismThe second wave took place in the 1960s and '70s becoming a reproductive rights movement, with goals around legalising abortion, ensuring easier and safe contraception, and fighting issue of racism and classism in birth control programs.

BRIEF We live upon a double edged sword. Our world is rife with global issues, political, societal, environmental, you name it, we're getting it wrong. BUT, on the other hand, there appears to be a rise in our ability to push back. The Black Lives Matter movement & #metoo are only two of the many movements that we've become increasingly aware of; movements which highlight and take a stand against institutionalised discrimination on a global scale. Through broad media coverage, the internet and social media, these movements can reach an audience, gaining a following and momentum very quickly. Throughout these and other such movements have seen a variety of slogans, banners, posters and such like, used to visually give voice to arguments, concerns, observations and key facts. Images of these designs and illustrations reach far and wide, taking their message with them. Your brief is to identify a problem that, to your mind, needs to be fought against, that needs to be given attention and that would benefit from a wider awareness. This could be a global issue like those mentioned above or it could be a small and more local concern. You are going to create the materials which will be used to protest against your chosen injustice and inform those less familiar with it - importantly, the materials you create should available to be used by anyone, anywhere, to join the fight. This is your 'Protest Pack™' IdeasFor this project I had three man ideas I was considering, first was the underfunding of the NHS, second was the hand-ification of ethic minorities that are native to china, or period shaming. I felt quite strongly about each of these topics, as my sister is a nurse for the NHS, and tells my family the many ways the lack of funding effects her work and the patients she works with. For example she informed us that she had to dry patients after their bed baths with pillow cases because her hospital didn't have the funding to have their laundry done. Personally I think this is very disgraceful, especially when it comes to caring for our elderly.
Over the past few years I have been learning about the human right atrocities committed by the CCP ( Chinese Communist Party) against the ethnic minorities of China, and not only the Uighur Muslims, but the many other groups native to china. The horrors that the Uighur are currently facing is something to fight against and a long side then I would also like to bring attention to the other groups who's culture is being supressed. Their are 56 ethnic groups that are native to China and the CCP to trying to make them more like the Han majority. Most of them resemble the Han majority and can speak Mandarin so the Chinese government doesn't resort to completely wiping their cultures, however they are made to act like show ponies in tourist villages, where they must perform in their traditional clothing for the Han. For a lot of these people they must be part of these villages or risk their cultural homes being destroyed due to construction projects. They might not be suffering to the same extent as the Uighurs but they don't deserve to have their culture watered down and Han-ified. Eventually I decided to go with my final idea, period shaming, which is a lot more personal to me as I recently experienced it while at University, by one of my female housemates. They called me disgusting for disposing of my sanitary products in the bin, which is a ridiculous thing to have to deal with as an adult. I personally don't think anyone should be made to feel ashamed of a natural process that many people go through, regardless of age. I believe this topic is the best choice as I have had personal experience that is fuelled me with the fury I need to create a protest pack. |
